Family going through their tax return at the kitchen table

Tax return for families and married couples in Winterthur

In the Canton of Zurich, married couples are assessed jointly: both partners' income and assets go into a single tax return. That is exactly where the most common mistakes happen — the dual-earner deduction, child deductions, childcare costs and the split of assets are regularly declared too low or not at all.

We record your family situation in full and work through the options. Prices start at CHF 100 — no matter how many salary certificates are involved.

Who this service is for

  • Married couples and couples in a registered partnership
  • Families with children in education
  • Single parents
  • Separated or divorced people paying or receiving maintenance

What we actually do

01

Child and childcare deductions

Child deduction, deduction for third-party childcare and education costs for adult children in their first course of education — we check which parent may claim which deduction.

02

Maintenance allocated correctly

Maintenance payments are deductible for the payer and taxable for the recipient. We make sure both sides are declared consistently — otherwise the tax office will come back with questions.

03

Tax rate and social deductions

Married-couple rate, dual-earner deduction, insurance deduction per child: the Canton of Zurich's social deductions are applied in full.

04

Family allowances checked

Child and family allowances paid out directly do not always appear on the salary certificate — we make a point of asking about them.

Example: family with two children in Winterthur

Both parents work part-time; one child goes to nursery, the other to after-school care. Alongside the child deductions, childcare costs are the biggest lever here — but they are only accepted if the care provider's invoices are available and both parents' employment is documented.

In practice, collecting exactly these documents is why the deduction so often goes unused. We ask for the relevant documents specifically and include them.

The documents we need

The more complete your documents, the faster it goes — and the lower your tax bill tends to be in the end. If anything is missing, we get back to you with a specific list.

  • Salary certificates for both partners
  • Dates of birth and AHV numbers (Swiss social security numbers) of all children
  • Invoices from the nursery, after-school care or childminder (third-party childcare costs)
  • Proof of family and child allowances
  • Documents on maintenance payments (divorce or separation agreement)
  • Bank and insurance statements for both partners

FAQ: Families & couples

Do we pay twice for two people?

No. Married couples file one joint tax return — the starting price of CHF 100 covers the whole household, however many salary certificates there are.

We got married last year. What changes?

From the year of your marriage you are assessed jointly — for the whole year, even if the wedding was in December. This can change your tax rate and deductions considerably; we work out the numbers for you.

We are separated. Who declares the children?

What counts is who the children live with and who pays maintenance. Special rules apply to joint custody with alternating care — we clarify this on the basis of your agreement.

Are nursery costs fully deductible?

No — only up to a maximum per child set by the canton, and only if the childcare is needed because of employment, education or incapacity to work. We apply the current maximum automatically.

Can we help?
