Tax return for the self-employed and sole traders in Winterthur
Self-employed people declare their business result on supplementary form A (Hilfsblatt A) of the tax return. This requires proper bookkeeping — or at least a statement of income, expenses and assets — as well as depreciation, private-use shares and AHV (Swiss old-age and survivors' insurance, OASI) contributions.
Because the work involved depends heavily on the state of your records, we charge by time here: from CHF 60 per hour. After a first look at your figures, we tell you how many hours to expect.
Who this service is for
- Sole traders and self-employed people
- People with a self-employed side business
- Freelancers, tradespeople, consultants and creatives

What we actually do
Supplementary form A and accounts
We prepare or review your year-end accounts and transfer them correctly to supplementary form A — profit and loss account, balance sheet, depreciation and provisions.
Private use separated cleanly
Company car, home office, phone, goods taken for private use: private-use shares are the most common reason for the tax office to add income back. We set them at the applicable rates before the tax office does.
AHV and pension provision
AHV contributions, Pillar 3a without a pension fund (up to 20 per cent of earned income, maximum CHF 36,288) and voluntary occupational pension (BVG) cover are all taken fully into account.
VAT in view
We check whether your turnover triggers VAT registration and whether the accounting method and net tax rate match your bookkeeping.
Example: sole trader as a side business
An employed graphic designer also runs a sole proprietorship with a turnover of around CHF 30,000. She keeps her receipts in a folder but has no bookkeeping. We draw up the income and expenditure statement, depreciate the laptop, separate out the private share of the internet subscription and enter everything on supplementary form A.
Time needed in a case like this: typically two to three hours, i.e. CHF 120 to 180 on top of the tax return. Anyone who has already entered their receipts in a spreadsheet will pay considerably less.
The documents we need
The more complete your documents, the faster it goes — and the lower your tax bill tends to be in the end. If anything is missing, we get back to you with a specific list.
- Bookkeeping or a statement of income and expenses for the business year
- Balance sheet and profit and loss account, if available
- Fixed asset register and depreciation schedule
- AHV statement and contribution ruling
- Business account statements as at 31 December
- Documents on private-use shares (vehicle, home office, phone)
- List of receivables and payables as at 31 December
FAQ: Self-employed
Do I need proper bookkeeping?
With annual turnover below CHF 500,000, a statement of income, expenses and financial position is sufficient. Above that, full double-entry bookkeeping is required. We tell you what is needed in your case.
What will it really cost in the end?
From CHF 60 per hour. Once we have looked at your documents, you receive an estimate of the time involved. If it turns out to be more than expected, we let you know beforehand — not with the invoice.
Can I carry losses forward?
Yes. In the Canton of Zurich, losses from self-employment can be offset against income for the following seven years, provided they were properly declared and accepted.
When does self-employment become a hobby in the eyes of the tax office?
If no profit is made for years and there is no recognisable intention to make one, the tax office classifies the activity as a hobby — and the losses are then not deductible. We give you a realistic assessment of this risk.
